Treasures of nature

The region of Topolovgrad is a beautiful unspoiled countryside. It lies in the border South-East corner of Bulgaria between the mythic Rhodope and the majestic Strandja mountains. The massif of Sacar in the South-West part of the area is unexpectedly imposing despite its low altitude (856m). The picturesque valley of the Tundja River (one of biggest rivers in the country) stretches to the East, with its impressive rocks, dense forests and fascinating wild life.

A great biodiversity has been preserved in the Sacar Mountain and along the Tundja valley. A number of plants and animals are protected not only in Bulgaria but also in Europe and worldwide. Birdlife is especially notable. Here 203 bird species are available, many of which are threatened with extinction (23 - in Europe and 3 - in the world). The world-threatened King Eagle, the symbol of Sacar, has found one of its last asylums in the region. Two types of the world-threatened terrestrial turtles that inhabit the area in one of the greatest concentrations in Bulgaria and in Europe are of special interest as well. Although rarely the otter, which lives in purest water only, could be seen in some rivers and reservoirs.
