Heritage sightes

Once known as Avroleva and Masteyra (the Sacred Mountain), the Sacar keeps countless secrets dating back from long, long ago. You will dip into the past when visiting the Thracian dolmens in the environs of the villages Hlyabovo and Sacarci or if you climb the mysterious rocky Sanctuary of the Sun Peleokastro. Ruins of 40 settlements and fortresses that were established in Ancient times but existed also during the Middle Ages have been found in the region. The most impressive ones are the remains of the famous medieval fortress Vukelon near the village of Matochina, at the very boundary with Turkey (38km to the Sout-East of Topolovgrad). Its 18-meters high tower has been preserved which is one of the few authentic sights of that time in Bulgaria.

• Thracian Dolmens

Christianity is deeply rooted in the region. The earliest evidence of this fact are the two rock churches dating back from the 10th c. (near the villages of Matochina and Ustrem). During the 19th and the 20th c. more than 30 orthodox temples have been built and local artists have painted most of them. The Holly Mother Cathedral in Topolovgrad is the most imposing one with its beautiful frescoes and wood-carved iconostasis. Another sight that you should’n miss is the Holly Trinity Monastery that is among the greatest ecclesiastic centers in this part of the country.

It is also worthy to visit the Museum of Topolovgrad where one will learn more about nature, history and ethnography of the region.
